MFM ANNOUNCEMENTS
Support Minneapolis Friends during the FNVW Holiday Fair. Minneapolis Friends is looking for a few folks to distribute some posters and postcards in the neighborhood during the week of November 9th (this next week). The posters can be put in local shops or coffee shops, and postcards can be given out to your friends and put in neighborhood mailboxes. The posters and postcards are on shelf next to the elevator. Please take only what you will distribute.
• We are also looking for Friends to help out for a short time to move chairs in the Meeting Room and some furniture from the Conference room on Sunday, November 30 in preparation for the FNVW Holiday Fair set up.
• We are also looking for a few volunteers to be present during the FNVW setup and the Fair. These volunteers would fill a 4-hour slot and just be here as a direct contact for the FNVW folks to answer questions and make sure the FNVW folks are careful with the Meeting House.
• If you wish to volunteer for any of these roles, click here for the volunteer schedule. Or, you can contact John K.
To sign up as a second hour worship greeter, see Mary S at the rise of meeting. This is a great way to get acquainted with others.
Individuals who feel led to share a prepared message or a reading during semi-programmed worship are asked to contact Lolly L or other members of Ministry and Counsel Committee (M&C). The committee is also looking for closers for both worships. Serving as a closer is a ministry of service to the meeting.
Contributions update: First quarter contributions totaled $26,217, about 19% of our budget. Second quarter contributions totaled $14,549, about 10.5% of the budget. Contributions of $97,567 (70% of the budget) – or $16,261 per month – are needed to meet our budgeted obligations. Thank you, Friends, for your generous financial support of the meeting. There is now a donate tab on MFM’s website (click here). If you would like to set up automatic contributions to the meeting, contact Carolyn V, clerk of Stewardship and Finance Committee.

An invitation to participate in an interfaith path to national confrontation of authoritarianism: ISAIAH is launching a faith-based strategy called Palm Sunday Path with a national vision. Over 250 Minnesota clergy have launched a series of trainings to churches in ten Midwestern states. Quakers can help strengthen the presence in all of our communities by working with interfaith coalitions. Although the focus is using Christian messaging to organize Christian communities, the Muslim coalition of ISAIAH is launching a parallel EID Path, and secular organizations are focusing actions through Earth Day.
• Please learn more about how you can launch awareness in your community by attending one of these trainings: Tuesday November 11, 10:00 AM – noon, or Thursday November 13, 1:00 – 3:00 PM. Click here to register on ISAIAH’s website. (It says Minnesota churches, but all faith leaders from all states are encouraged to attend.) The project is actively looking for faith leaders in other states to spread the word more broadly.
• ISAIAH will organize over 5,000 people in a statewide convention and anti-authoritarianism strategy training on December 13. Click here to register. They will train people in both state and national strategies which include engagement through the Minnesota caucuses of any party on February 3. Please consider attending.
Do you seek to live in that Life and Power that takes away the occasion for all war, to be deeply connected to the Spirit which sustains and empowers us? Christopher Sammond, who led workshops for Minneapolis Meeting a few years ago, is offering a workshop at Pendle Hill this February, focusing on listening for guidance. Come learn how to better connect to the Source, and how to sustain ourselves in a force more powerful. The workshop is for those hoping to deepen their direct experience of the Divine – newcomers to Quakerism as well as more seasoned Friends. Some scholarship support available from Pendle Hill; financial support may also be available from Minneapolis Meeting Trustees. Click here for more on Pendle Hill’s website.
Friends for a NonViolent World (FNVW) invites the community to its annual Holiday Fair, held Friday, December 5 from 1:00 – 9:00 PM and Saturday, December 6 from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM at the Minneapolis Meetinghouse. Enjoy live music, tasty café food, and an array of local treasures from pottery, jewelry, and handmade crafts to holiday wreaths, books, and Quaker Treasures. We have many volunteering opportunities to choose from like planning, set-up to clean-up, book sorting and transporting, decorating, table moving, and plenty of jobs for folks in the kitchen including cooking, washing, serving, and many more. Click here to see all the different roles and shifts available, and choose one or two that suit you best! For updates about the Fair, click here. Reinvent FNVW Becomes Quaker Direct Action. We are excited to announce that Reinvent FNVW (Friends for a Non Violent World), an effort you have been hearing about in recent months, is now Quaker Direct Action. The purpose of Quaker Direct Action (QDA) is to encourage and support Quaker Action Teams that work on issues important to local Friends. The Quaker Action Teams will use the model of nonviolent direct-action campaigns described most notably in the work of Quaker activist George Lakey.
• The Reinvent FNVW group originally hoped to work within Friends for a Nonviolent World (FNVW) to carry out its vision. However, the FNVW board has decided that it will not take on the Reinvent program at this time, nor is it able to share resources with us. The board is focusing all its attention on strengthening the Alternatives to Violence Program (AVP) before spinning it off as a separate nonprofit. That work will take many months, a year, maybe more. We could not wait, and so formed Quaker Direct Action. We are open to joining FNVW at a later date should that be possible. Watch for further information soon.
November 11 (in person). About Face: Veterans Against the War – Twin Cities members are calling for Minnesota community to join them in honoring Armistice Day by defending military members’ Right to Refuse. On Tuesday November 11, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs will host a breakfast and program in recognition of Veterans Day – also known as Armistice Day, a day that should be calling for peace in our communities and throughout the world. About Face: Veterans Against the War members are taking their Right to Refuse campaign directly to the National Guard and other state officials, and asking community members to attend in support. We will be uplifting the rights of military members’ of all ranks to refuse illegal, unethical, and immoral orders; while we also call for our government officials to ensure that they side with the people as we demand no ICE, no occupation, no fascism, and no cuts that strip away life saving services from our community! This veteran-led solidarity event will take place on Tuesday, November 11, 8:30 – 11:00 AM at the Mankato National Guard Armory. Click here to register for updates on Mobilize.

November 17 (online). The Anti-Racist Working Group of Northern Yearly Meeting is sponsoring a presentation by Kat Griffith (Winnebago Worship Group) on “Immigration: How We Got Here, A Better Path Forward.” The presentation covers four main topics:
• What the data tell us about migration across the southern border and the resources devoted to border security since 1990 — data from Customs and Border Protection that challenge much of the current public narrative.
• The human face of immigration: stories of individual asylum seekers Kat has known and worked with, conditions in sending countries, and their experiences with ICE.
• An overview of immigration since 2023, including executive orders under both Presidents Biden and Trump and their impacts.
• The incentives and realities that drive migrant decision-making and how we might foster a better national conversation about immigration.
