TODAY’S WORSHIP AND PROGRAM
9:00 AM – 10:00 AM Unprogrammed Meeting for Worship
Care of meeting: Mary Bosserman
Zoom host: Bill H
10:15 AM – 11:00 AM Medical Aid in Dying
The Death and Memorial Committee is hosting this mid-morning program. Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) legislation has been proposed, but not passed, in Minnesota for ten consecutive years. It would allow a terminally ill adult of sound mind the right to receive a prescription medication they may self-administer to achieve a peaceful death. Our guest speaker on this topic will be Rev. Harlan Limpert, a retired Unitarian Universalist minister. As a former parish minister and hospital chaplain, he brings decades of experience supporting individuals through their end-of-life journey. Rev. Limpert says, “MAID is grounded in compassion for those suffering from a terminal illness. Attend this program to learn more about MAID, the status of MAID in the legislature, and why Quakers’ value of compassion leads them to support this legislation.”
Zoom host: Marilyn J

“Have fun making something for the Friends for a Nonviolent World’s Holiday Fair which will be December 5 – 6. Make, for example, a small quilt for a crib to welcome a baby to the beauty of our natural world, or a padded protector to hold a hot bowl of soup in your hands, or a delicate knitted cowl for your neck, or make anything you want, or work on a joint project. I have lots of free yarn and I can teach you to knit if you don’t know how. Let’s meet once a week for 1 or 2 hours in the afternoon or evening in my home or yours.” — Susie K

WIDER COMMUNITY

Call to Action for Minneapolis Friends: Minneapolis Meeting hosted a fundraiser / visibility event last year for the East Philips Neighborhood Institute (EPNI) in support of its Roof Depot project. That project would create a neighborhood hub, urban farm, and job center for the disenfranchised people of East Philips. The community has spent almost 10 years developing this plan and raising funds to convert the toxic-ridden site into a community asset. Mayor Frey worked to impede the EPNI plan, wanting, instead, to develop a transfer station, adding noise and pollutants to an already environmentally compromised area. This plan would include demolishing the current structures on site, releasing additional poisons, including arsenic, into the East Philips neighborhood. Minneapolis Friends are encouraged call / email those in the Frey administration, urging them to demonstrate their commitment to the care of the environment, environmental justice, and climate resiliency by moving the EPNI project forward. Click here for Mayor Frey’s contact info and click here for council members’ contact info. Click here for EPNI’s statement on their website about State funding, here for EPNI’s webpage about the project’s vision, and here for EPNI growth report.
The FNVW Holiday Fair needs donations of pristine, giftable objects from your past that someone else can now treasure. Contact Mary Ellen S to discuss donations. If you don’t have her contact info, ask the office. Deadline to receive is Thursday, December 4. The Fair runs Dec 5 and 6; click here to sign up to volunteer.
Reinvent FNVW Becomes Quaker Direct Action. We are excited to announce that Reinvent FNVW [Friends for a Non Violent World], an effort you have been hearing about in recent months, is now Quaker Direct Action. The purpose of Quaker Direct Action (QDA) is to encourage and support Quaker Action Teams that work on issues important to local Friends. The Quaker Action Teams will use the model of nonviolent direct-action campaigns described most notably in the work of Quaker activist George Lakey.
The Reinvent FNVW group originally hoped to work within Friends for a Nonviolent World (FNVW) to carry out its vision. However, the FNVW board has decided that it will not take on the Reinvent program at this time, nor is it able to share resources with us. The board is focusing all its attention on strengthening the Alternatives to Violence Program (AVP) before spinning it off as a separate nonprofit. That work will take many months, a year, maybe more. We could not wait, and so formed Quaker Direct Action. We are open to joining FNVW at a later date should that be possible.
November 6 (in person). “No Other Land” movie screening at New City Center, 3104 16th Avenue S, Minneapolis. This free screening of this Oscar-winning documentary feature by a Palestinian-Israeli collective shows the destruction of a Palestinian community in the occupied West Bank. The discussion will feature community members with direct ties to Israel and Palestine. The event is free and open to the public but free-will donations will be accepted and sent directly to support relief efforts in Gaza. Free childcare is available on site. Click here to register for a free ticket on Eventbrite.
November 6 (in person). Minnesota Multifaith Network (MnMN) annual conference will be held 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM at House of Hope Presbyterian Church, 797 Summit Ave, St Paul, MN 55105. The theme is “The Time is Now: Strengthening Engagement, Understanding and Equity for ALL.” Pluralism is our antidote to hate and extremism and the key to peace and healing for our nation at this present time. Click here to find more information and register on MnMN’s website. In the spirit of equity and community, there is no set cost to attend; please donate if you can, and register as a student if you cannot contribute financially.
November 7 (online). Get to know Friends Peace Teams’ inspiring work in North America. Click here to register on Friends Peace Teams’ website. Registration is needed for planning purposes.
November 7-9 (in person). Nightingales will meet for a weekend of singing, fellowship, and sharing of food at a location near Prairie du Chien, WI. The fall gathering will be November 7-9 (this is an updated announcement – previous plans had been for a weekend in October). For some 40 years, Quakers from Northern Yearly Meeting have gathered to sing, two to three times a year, in various locations in MN and WI. If you love to sing, you are encouraged to join. Many kinds of songs are welcome, old and new, solemn to silly. Singers work together to cook and clean, and there’s time for a nap or a walk in the woods and always good fellowship. For more info, contact Janet A.
November 11 (in person). About Face: Veterans Against the War – Twin Cities members are calling for Minnesota community to join them in honoring Armistice Day by defending military members’ Right to Refuse. On Tuesday November 11, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs will host a breakfast and program in recognition of Veterans Day – also known as Armistice Day, a day that should be calling for peace in our communities and throughout the world. About Face: Veterans Against the War members are taking their Right to Refuse campaign directly to the National Guard and other state officials, and asking community members to attend in support. We will be uplifting the rights of military members’ of all ranks to refuse illegal, unethical, and immoral orders; while we also call for our government officials to ensure that they side with the people as we demand no ICE, no occupation, no fascism, and no cuts that strip away life saving services from our community! This veteran-led solidarity event will take place on Tuesday, November 11, 8:30 – 11:00 AM at the Mankato National Guard Armory. Click here to register for updates on Mobilize.

The fee is “pay as led.” Linked by the Spirit and our common purpose, we will listen together for where we are called to this vital work. November 17 (online). The Anti-Racist Working Group of Northern Yearly Meeting is sponsoring a presentation by Kat G (Winnebago Worship Group) on “Immigration: How We Got Here, A Better Path Forward.” The presentation covers four main topics:
• What the data tell us about migration across the southern border and the resources devoted to border security since 1990 — data from Customs and Border Protection that challenge much of the current public narrative.
• The human face of immigration: stories of individual asylum seekers Kat has known and worked with, conditions in sending countries, and their experiences with ICE.
• An overview of immigration since 2023, including executive orders under both Presidents Biden and Trump and their impacts.
• The incentives and realities that drive migrant decision-making and how we might foster a better national conversation about immigration.
