“Have fun making something for the Friends for a Nonviolent World’s Holiday Fair which will be December 5 – 6. Make, for example, a small quilt for a crib to welcome a baby to the beauty of our natural world, or a padded protector to hold a hot bowl of soup in your hands, or a delicate knitted cowl for your neck, or make anything you want, or work on a joint project. I have lots of free yarn and I can teach you to knit if you don’t know how. Let’s meet once a week for 1 or 2 hours in the afternoon or evening in my home or yours. I live very close to the meetinghouse. Call me and let’s find a good time to get together. – Susie K”
Kitchen supplies: When using the kitchen, please be mindful of which supplies belong to Mayim Rabim. Some items have disappeared recently from their supply cupboard. The signage has been improved to make it easier to distinguish what belongs to whom. If it’s not clear to you, let the office know.

November 2 (hybrid). Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) legislation has been proposed, but not passed, in Minnesota for ten consecutive years. It would allow a terminally ill adult of sound mind the right to receive a prescription medication they may self-administer to achieve a peaceful death. Our guest speaker on this topic will be Rev. Harlan Limpert, a retired Unitarian Universalist minister. As a former parish minister and hospital chaplain, he brings decades of experience supporting individuals through their end-of-life journey. Rev. Limpert says, “MAID is grounded in a value implicit in everything Quaker’s do: compassion, in this case compassion for those suffering from a terminal illness. Attend this program to learn more about MAID, the status of MAID in the legislature, and why Quakers value of compassion lead them to support this legislation.” The Death and Memorial Committee is hosting this mid-morning program on Sunday, November 2, 10:15 – 11:00 AM.
November 2 (in person). All-Meeting Potluck is once a month on first Sundays. During the academic year, it starts at 12:15 PM. Come after semi-programmed meeting for worship for friendly food and conversation at the potluck downstairs. New attender or seasoned member – all are welcome whether you brought anything or not! If you brought a dish, please label ingredients so everyone can participate without worry.
November 9 (in person). Movie night series with Mayim Rabim begins on Sunday, November 9. Join us for a free screening of “Crossing Delancey”, the first film in a series organized by the Joyful Aging group, a social collaboration between Minneapolis Friends and Mayim Rabim. Come for food, film, or both in the residential party room at the Marketplace and Main building in Hopkins: 10 7th Ave. North (small parking lot off 7th Ave. next to Amy’s Cupcakes). Please RSVP to Jeff N so we know how many folks to expect. About the movie: “Crossing Delancey” has been described as “the ultimate Jewish rom-com.” Izzy Grossman, a modern, independent woman works in a West Side bookstore and idolizes the literati, but her comfortable world is disrupted when her Lower East Side, Yiddish-speaking grandmother hires a matchmaker for her. Izzy finds herself torn between a married, worldly author and a down-to-earth pickle vendor. An affectionate and humorous portrait of Jewish culture in transition, starring Amy Irving and Peter Riegert.

Reinvent FNVW Becomes Quaker Direct Action. We are excited to announce that Reinvent FNVW [Friends for a Non Violent World], an effort you have been hearing about in recent months, is now Quaker Direct Action. The purpose of Quaker Direct Action (QDA) is to encourage and support Quaker Action Teams that work on issues important to local Friends. The Quaker Action Teams will use the model of nonviolent direct-action campaigns described most notably in the work of Quaker activist George Lakey.
The Reinvent FNVW group originally hoped to work within Friends for a Nonviolent World (FNVW) to carry out its vision. However, the FNVW board has decided that it will not take on the Reinvent program at this time, nor is it able to share resources with us. The board is focusing all its attention on strengthening the Alternatives to Violence Program (AVP) before spinning it off as a separate nonprofit. That work will take many months, a year, maybe more. We could not wait, and so formed Quaker Direct Action. We are open to joining FNVW at a later date should that be possible. Watch for further information soon.
