MFM ANNOUNCEMENTS
Happy birthday Betsy S (October 1), Kal-El S (October 5), Kathy W (October 6), Jan Z (October 9), and Tom W (October 28)! Let Friends celebrate YOU! If you would like to have your birthday acknowledged by meeting Friends, please send the month and date of your birth (no year necessary) to Judith J.
When you are a planned speaker, you may choose hymns for that meeting for worship. If you would like hymns played, please send the titles to office(Replace this parenthesis with the @ sign)minneapolisfriends.org. The deadline is Thursday 11:00 AM, three days before the worship service. Ariel, the office manager, will forward your message to the musician, A/V technician, and other people who need to know before the service. Please also mention your hymn choice to the closer for that meeting for worship.
Joining the MFM Google Group is an easy way to engage with the Meeting – to share and see articles of interest, participate in informal discussion, to receive reminders from other Friends about upcoming events. To sign up, simply send an email request to Roland B. For more about the MFM Google Group, click here. Also, to keep abreast of Meeting news, you can find bulletins, events, and monthly meeting minutes on the MFM website (click here).
Lost and Found items are collected in a box in the basement outside the kitchen. Along with coats left on the coat rack, these will be donated soon. Please look for your belongings and take them by Sunday, October 19. Items remaining after that Sunday will be donated.
Can you volunteer for the FNVW Holiday Fair? It’s on December 5 and December 6 at the Minneapolis Meetinghouse. See details in this bulletin under Wider Community to find details about volunteering.
Contributions update: First quarter contributions totaled $26,217, which is about 19% of our budget. Giving is often lighter in the summer months. We are almost on track to meet our annual budget. Thank you, Friends, for your generous financial support of the meeting. There is now a donate tab on MFM’s website (click here). If you would like to set up automatic contributions to the meeting, contact Carolyn V, clerk of Stewardship and Finance Committee.
MFM EVENTS
You’ll notice this bulletin section is shorter than it used to be. Half a dozen groups meet monthly through MFM. Those ongoing groups are now listed on a separate flyer. Similarly, instead of bulletin notices, there is a flyer about ongoing Quaker events and resources outside MFM. One-time MFM events will remain in this weekly bulletin, as you see below. Please pick up a printed copy of these flyers from the meetinghouse, or email office(Replace this parenthesis with the @ sign)minneapolis.org to request a digital copy.
September 29 (in person). Help feed a multitude and meet other interfaith volunteers on the Loaves and Fishes kitchen crew at Holy Rosary Church, 2424 18th Avenue South in Minneapolis. Choose a shift: 2:00 PM prep ingredients, 4:00 PM assemble the meal, 5:15 PM serve and clean up – or stay all afternoon! Contact Sue K to sign up or discuss fruit donations. Alternately, you can use the signup sheet that you’ll find beside the meetinghouse guestbook. Click here for more info on Loaves and Fishes’ website.
October 5 (in person). All-Meeting Potluck is once a month on first Sundays. During the academic year, it starts at 12:15 PM. Come after semi-programmed meeting for worship for friendly food and conversation at the potluck downstairs. New attender or seasoned member – all are welcome whether you brought anything or not! If you brought a dish, please label ingredients so everyone can participate without worry.
October 5 (hybrid). Lolly Lijewski will present the mid-morning program on Sunday, October 5. Her topic is, “Over 40 years of handling seven dogs and living with them 24/7, depending on them for my safety, and seeing them through the seasons of their lives, while they see me through the stages of my life, I believe in a spiritual connection that forms between us. Handlers and trainers call it the ‘Bond.’ I will share my experiences over time and discuss why this is a particularly special connection between animal and human.”
October 11 (in person). Fall Together, an annual retreat held by MFM, is a wonderful opportunity to gather with Friends and rest, relax, renew, re-connect and relish time together in the great outdoors. This year’s retreat will be at Fish Lake Regional Park in Plymouth, MN, a beautiful setting familiar to those who have attended Fall Together in recent years. Camp Committee has made a flyer to share their exciting plans; you can find a printed copy in the meetinghouse on the hallway table, or email office(Replace this parenthesis with the @ sign)minneapolisfriends.org to request a digital copy. Contact Wina M with questions.
WIDER COMMUNITY
AFSC (American Friends Service Committee) has created yard signs that say “Quaker Communities are Stronger with Immigrants.” They invite people to show solidarity with migrants by placing these signs outside their homes and places of worship. Click here to order one on AFSC’s website.
October 7 – December 16 (online). Sumud: A Quaker Study in Palestinian Self-Determination has opened registration. Friends, in these times of war, let us sow seeds of peace and justice. In this workshop, dubbed “Sumud” (Arabic for resilience and determination), we will learn about the history of the struggle for Palestinian self-determination. We will also reflect on how our spiritual values guide our work for a brighter future. Look forward to appearances by Palestinian, Jewish, and Quaker guest speakers. Click here to sign up on Quaker Sumud’s website.
October 9 (in person). Stories the Land Holds explores layered histories of the land between the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers. We are all family members of our planet, caretakers of one another and of our common home on Earth. Through storytelling, reflection, and dialogue, we’ll ask: “What has the land absorbed? Who has lived here, been welcomed, excluded, or expelled? How have these histories shaped our present?” This project is hosted by Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 4801 France Ave S, Minneapolis. The first session is Thursday, October 9 at 7:00 PM, and the series continues on Thursdays November 20, January 22, February 12, April 16, and May 14. Click here to learn more on Stories the Land Holds’ website.

We will experience the virtual event together, featuring keynote speakers followed by facilitated in-person discussion. Registration fee: $75. Lunch included. This conference is designed for Minnesotan rural and small city communities, but because the theme and speakers are also of interest to folks in the Metro area, FREC is hosting a conference site to participate. Click here to register on the website of FREC Greater Minnesota Partnership Racial Equity Conference.
