MFM ANNOUNCEMENTS
Curious about the membership process? Any attender is invited to talk about membership with a member of the Ministry and Counsel Committee or anyone who’s been around a while! It can be an informal one-on-one conversation or a more formal request for a clearness committee. Some indications that it might be time to explore membership in the Society of Friends at Minneapolis Meeting:
• You have worshiped among Friends and have sufficient understanding of Quaker values and practice to know if they are compatible with your experience.
• You feel led to the Meeting and inwardly encouraged to embrace and grow in Quaker faith and practice here.
• You feel an increasing commitment to the spiritual vitality and depth of the Meeting and to nurturing the members and attenders here.
• You increasingly feel the importance of weekly worship and connection with the life of the Meeting to your spiritual well-being.
• You feel an increasing commitment to participate in the life of the Meeting through monthly meeting and committee participation, and to contribute to the Meeting’s financial well-being, as you are able.
• You feel that the outward expression of membership would match your internal experience of commitment and belonging.
Care and Counsel Committee facilitates pastoral care for Minneapolis Meeting members and attendees, understanding the Quaker tradition that Friends minister to each other. If you are dealing with illness, grief, a major transition, or a stressful personal problem, we would like to be there for you. Contact committee co-clerks, John S or Ellen S.
If a confidential discussion would support you as you make a decision, we will set up a clearness committee with you. Email John S to explore that opportunity.
Other committee members are Mary G, Jeff N, Mary B, and Jimbo L.
When you need to enter the office, please bring an N95 mask, or take one of the masks provided. Masks are now required when entering the office on Sundays and on Ariel (the office manager)’s other work days. You’re welcome to drop by the office to say hi to Ariel, give him a bulletin announcement, request a zoom link, or ask for help with something else.
Contributions update: First quarter contributions totaled $26,217, which is about 19% of our budget. Giving is often lighter in the summer months. We are almost on track to meet our annual budget. Thank you, Friends, for your generous financial support of the meeting. There is now a donate tab on MFM’s website (click here). If you would like to set up automatic contributions to the meeting, contact Carolyn V, clerk of Stewardship and Finance Committee.
MFM Events
You’ll notice this bulletin section is shorter than it used to be. Half a dozen groups meet monthly through MFM. Those ongoing groups are now listed on a separate flyer. Similarly, instead of bulletin notices, there is a flyer about ongoing Quaker events and resources outside MFM. One-time MFM events will remain in this weekly bulletin, as you see below. This change is intended to make it easier to find information, and save paper.
September 28 (hybrid). Postcard and letter-writing with the Peace and Social Concerns Committee continues every third or fourth Sunday. This is a good opportunity to stand up against fascism. Now that MFM is in fall schedule, the start time will be 12:30 PM, and we’ll gather in the conference room. Click here for the updated zoom link. Questions? Contact Jim H (612-722-5725) or Nettie S (612-386-2911).
September 29 (in person). Help feed a multitude and meet other interfaith volunteers on the Loaves and Fishes kitchen crew at Holy Rosary Church, 2424 18th Avenue South in Minneapolis. Choose a shift: 2:00 PM prep ingredients, 4:00 PM assemble the meal, 5:15 PM serve and clean up – or stay all afternoon! Contact Sue K to sign up or discuss fruit donations. Alternately, you can use the signup sheet that you’ll find beside the meetinghouse guestbook. Click here for more info on Loaves and Fishes’ website.
October 11 (in person). Fall Together, an annual retreat held by MFM, is a wonderful opportunity to gather with Friends and rest, relax, renew, re-connect and relish time together in the great outdoors. This year’s retreat will be at Fish Lake Regional Park in Plymouth, MN, a beautiful setting familiar to those who have attended Fall Together in recent years. Camp Committee has made a flyer to share their exciting plans; you can find a printed copy in the meetinghouse on the hallway table. Contact Wina M with questions.
WIDER COMMUNITY
Quaker Youth UN Ambassadors Program is a new Quaker Earthcare Witness (QEW) program to equip a small cohort of four-to-eight young Friends (ages 14–35) to engage in the UN climate negotiations at COP30 in November 2025 as part of QEW’s online delegation. This year, QEW’s delegation will join the United Nations annual climate negotiations at COP30 Brasil Amazônia. This pilot blends literacy in international diplomacy, climate action, spiritual grounding, and storytelling so young Friends can bring clarity – and hope – into a complex global moment. Click here for the COP30 website. Questions? Contact info(Replace this parenthesis with the @ sign)quakerearthcare.org. Apply online (click here).
September 27 (in person). Linden Hills Fall Festival is set for Saturday, September 27 from noon to 6:00 PM in Linden Hills Park. Activities for kids and adults include kickball games, chalk art competition, used book sales to benefit the libraries, a local history walking tour, clog dancing performance, and more. Click here to see the schedule of music and activities, or to sign up as a volunteer, on the Linden Hills Neighborhood Council website. You can also find a calendar of other neighborhood events on the website (click here).
October 7 – December 16 (online). Sumud: A Quaker Study in Palestinian Self-Determination has opened registration. Friends, in these times of war, let us sow seeds of peace and justice. In this workshop, dubbed “Sumud” (Arabic for resilience and determination), we will learn about the history of the struggle for Palestinian self-determination. We will also reflect on how our spiritual values guide our work for a brighter future. Look forward to appearances by Palestinian, Jewish, and Quaker guest speakers. Click here to sign up on Quaker Sumud’s website.
October 9 (in person). Stories the Land Holds explores layered histories of the land between the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers. We are all family members of our planet, caretakers of one another and of our common home on Earth. Through storytelling, reflection, and dialogue, we’ll ask: “What has the land absorbed? Who has lived here, been welcomed, excluded, or expelled? How have these histories shaped our present?” This project is hosted by Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 4801 France Ave S, Minneapolis. The first session is Thursday, October 9 at 7:00 PM, and the series continues on Thursdays November 20, January 22, February 12, April 16, and May 14. Click here to learn more on Stories the Land Holds’ website.
October 10 (hybrid). Weaving a Wider Community: Seeing and Countering Racism in Our Own Backyard. There is a local gathering for this conference at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Community, 4537 3rd Ave. S, Minneapolis, on Friday October 10, 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM. We will experience the virtual event together, featuring keynote speakers followed by facilitated in-person discussion. Registration fee: $75. Lunch included. This conference is designed for Minnesotan rural and small city communities, but because the theme and speakers are also of interest to folks in the Metro area, FREC is hosting a conference site to participate. Click here to register on the website of FREC Greater Minnesota Partnership Racial Equity Conference.
October 16-19 (hybrid). Quaker Earthcare Witness fall gathering is open to anyone interested in Quaker concerns for Earthcare. This annual gathering will be held in-person at Powell House in New York, as well as online. Through workshops, plenary sessions, and shared reflection, we will explore the many things that connect us and our responsibility to each other and the planet. Click here to learn more on QEW’s website.
October 21 (in person). Join the Minnesota Council of Churches for an inspiring evening with Dr. Anton Treuer – Ojibwe scholar, author, and racial equity educator – as he explores pathways to racial justice through truth-telling, cultural humility, and community healing. Drawing on his experience in Native American history, language revitalization, and equity work, Dr. Treuer will challenge us to move beyond reforming broken systems and instead build new frameworks of liberation. This event will offer practical strategies for fostering authentic dialogue, bridging cultural divides, and advancing justice across faith traditions. All are welcome to this interfaith gathering. Click here to register on the Minnesota Council of Churches website.
