On good days
I remember that
all of life sings
with a sacred hum
you can feel it
in the cadence
of your breath
and the beat
of your heart
you can hear it
in the gurgle of water
and the sizzle of
oil in the pan
you can see it
in the sparkle in
a loved one’s eyes
each moment
so many
holy miracles
that I am gobsmacked
with the joy of it all

and then I turn on the news
I hear of bombings
and shootings and
political chaos
there are wildfires in Texas
and it’s almost 70° Fahrenheit
on a Sunday in early March
in Minneapolis
and my heart shatters

My work is
to show up
with my heart open
to hold it all
in the Light
the miracles and
the tragedies
to turn my grief
into action
to do the little bits
of good that I can
to keep hope alive
and to listen for
the sacred hum
