“The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’ Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’” ~ 1 Kings 19:11 –13 NIV

Living Lightly: During the holidays, it’s easy to overestimate how much we can do, make, wrap, entertain, and how much we will eat. An estimated one third of all the food produced in the world goes to waste – about 1.3 billion tons of fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, seafood, and grains. When we waste food, we also waste all the energy and water it takes to grow, harvest, process, and transport it. And if food goes into a landfill, it produces methane. Strive to be mindful food consumers this season and all year around – plan ahead; buy only what you need; use your freezer; be creative with leftovers and food you already have; cook with wilted, browning or less than perfects to make the most of them; share with others your ideas and your commitment to reducing your contribution to the 7.41 million tons of needless greenhouse emissions.
