It’s cold and flu season. In the interest of keeping older and immunocompromised Friends healthy, consider staying home if you have a virus. To everyone, wash your hands often and use the hand sanitizer near the elevator.
Quaker etiquette: Vocal ministry in worship is a conscientious response to a discerned leading of the Spirit. Meeting for worship is not the occasion for conversation and rarely the time for responding to another’s message.

UPCOMING MEETING EVENTS
Mid-Morning Program next Sunday at 10:15: Everyone is Responsible – the Child Welfare Policy and Procedures. Minneapolis Meeting is like a village, all responsible in a variety of ways, to support, nurture, and protect the children and youth among us. Come learn about the new Child Welfare Policy and Procedures document which attempts to ensure just that. Small groups will explore the document, finding areas where all members can assist in ensuring the safety of our youth through creating a safe, friendly atmosphere to play, learn, and grow. Facilitated by Rae Beth Cornelius and Sigurd Hoppe.
Nominating Committee is at work to match Meeting needs with individual member / attender gifts and ministries. Please return phone calls from Nominating Committee members who reach out to you. Needed: a representative to Northern Yearly Meeting – attend yearly meeting and interim sessions, as you can; receives NYM news and pass along items of concern or interest to monthly meeting, the office for publication in the bulletin, or to individuals who might be particularly interested. If you are curious about this role or any other in the life of the Meeting, contact a member of Nominating Committee: Debbie, Annamary, Doug, and Jim.
Social Committee thanks everyone for the delicious, plentiful food shared at potlucks! Thank you, too, to the many who assist in the cleanup, allowing everyone leave at a reasonable hour. FYI, if you do not have time to write out the ingredients in your dish, you can find paper for that in the end drawer under the phone. If in a hurry, please just note whether it is gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, for has peanuts. And lastly, we are in need of decaf coffee and a few booster chairs. If you could donate either of these please contact, Rae Beth.
The Watson Reading Group will meet on Tues, Jan 21, at 7PM, here at the meetinghouse. Currently we are reading Testament of Devotion, by Thomas Kelly. At our monthly meetings we read aloud and reflect on how these and other texts can help us lead Light-centered lives during turbulent times in the world. Everyone is invited.
The MFM Writing Group will meet on Tues, Jan 28th at 7PM – a fun and informal evening, with no preparation necessary. At each meeting, we write from prompts and share our writing. Discussion and general merriment continues over tea and homemade cookies. Everyone welcome, no commitment — drop in once or come when you can. We’d love to have you come! Northern Yearly Meeting high school winter retreat at the Cannon Valley Meeting in Northfield, NEXT WEEKEND, 7PM Fri, Jan 24th (starting with a snack supper,) through Sun, noon, Jan 26th. Theme: Mental Health. Bring warm sleeping gear, layers for clothes; good hiking/walking shoes; flashlights; snacks to share; other necessities and PERMISSION FORM. Kindly Adult Presences eagerly sought. RSVP by Wed, Jan 22nd.
Save the date for the Northern Yearly Meeting Middle School Retreat, Feb 14-16th in Madison. Come for the sweetness of being with Friends – laughing, making art, playing games, getting outside, basking in Spirit, and delving into the discussion of institutionalized racism (with some climate considerations to boot!). Come to Joanne Esser’s book launch reading and celebration for Humming At The Dinner Table, her newly published collection of poems. Fri, Jan 31st, 7PM, Hamline University, Giddens/Alumni Learning Center, room 100E, 1556 Hewitt Ave, St. Paul 55104. Local writers, Lore Roethke and Antonia Barlage, will be reading as well. Refreshments and book signing follow.
OTHER HAPPENINGS AMONG QUAKERS
The Northern Yearly Meeting Journal is published quarterly and offers reflections, personal insights and testimonies from the work or experience of area Quakers. Original poetry, art, photography, articles, and letters to the editor are welcome. Please limit written articles to 1500 words; feel free to include a suggested image; MS Word or compatible format. Submission deadline for the winter issue is Jan 31st. Send submissions: nymjournal(Replace this parenthesis with the @ sign)gmail.com, or email with questions.
Area Young Adult Friends are having a potluck at Matthew and Hillis’ home, 524 – 20th Ave S, Mpls (for those with allergies – a cat also lives there) on Sun, Jan 26th, 6PM. Delicious vegan food, brief worship, and some sharing of who we are and what brings us to Quaker meeting. All young-adult-identifying folks are welcome, whether you are a regular or are just Quaker-curious! RSVP is helpful for food planning but not required.
The Elizabeth Ann Bogert Memorial Fund for het Study and Practice of Christian Mysticism Grants Program is soliciting proposals. Proposals and references for 2020 grants are due March 1; decisions made in May; grants distributed in June. COMMUNITY EVENTS
Every Church a Peace Church – Mon, Jan 27th, Joan of Arc Church, 4537 3rd Ave. S, Mpls. Potluck at 6:30; program: The wounds of war in Afghanistan, Yemen, and Iraq. Kathy Kelly will speak about the consequences of U.S. action in recent wars and will suggest ways that U.S. people can work to prevent future suffering among people affected by U.S. weapons and wars.
