UPCOMING MEETING EVENTS
Mid-Morning Program next Sunday at 10:15: The Challenges of Simplicity. Keitha Herron will share her personal struggles with the Quaker testimony of simplicity, followed by discussion. Friends will then be invited to start simplifying their lives through an exercise.
Please review the Child Welfare Committee’s revised child protection policy. It has been sent out via Google Group (Aug 20) and is posted on the website (minneapolisfriends.org/category/business-minutes). A few paper copies are by the elevator.
The current Ministry and Counsel Committee and the two Care of Worship sub-committees may be replaced by two new committees: a Worship and Ministry Committee and a Care and Counsel Committee. Everything you want to know about the possible restructuring, but may be afraid to ask, will be considered on Sat, Sept 28, 2 – 3:30 pm at the meetinghouse.
Loaves and Fishes: Monday Sept 30th is the next opportunity for MFM to help prepare and serve dinner to the people of the Phillips neighborhood at Holy Rosary Church, 2424 18th Av. S, Mpls. Please work with area Friends, folks from the Ismaili Community and Mayim Rabim if you have a few hours between 2 and 7pm that day. Volunteers sign up for shifts: chopping veggies or prepping dessert fruit 2:00-4:30pm; serving food 4:45-6:30pm; clean up 5:30-7pm. Fresh fruit donations for dessert are needed, too. Sign-up sheet is on the bulletin table.
Minneapolis Monthly Meeting agreed to host Northern Yearly Meeting’s Fall Interim Session here at the meetinghouse on November 1st and 2nd, 2019. Meeting is looking for friends who can provide accommodation for out of town guests on Friday (and possibly Saturday) night and breakfast the following morning(s). Some guests may also need transportation help to the meetinghouse. This is a great opportunity to renew or make new acquaintances with friends in our Yearly Meeting. Please respond as soon as convenient–hopefully by Sept 30th.
Plan to come to Fall Together, Sat, Oct 26th at Fish Lake Regional Park in Plymouth! Fall Together has been revamped to be an easy breezy gathering of fun, potluck food, conversation, and song. We have The Pavilion 9am to 9pm – arrive and leave when you need. We’ll have the whole building to ourselves, near the lake, bike trails, and walking trails. There’s a fireplace as well as a kitchen. Come add to the fun!
The newish writing group will meet 7 PM Tues, Sept 24th at the home of Jane and David. A relaxed but structured group, we have a writing exercise or two with the chance to share with each other. Read the Quaker classic, Testament of Devotion, with the reading group on Tues, Sept 24th, (NOTE the departure from the regular schedule,) at 7pm in the conference room. No need to read ahead – we’ll read together! Everyone welcome!
SAVE THE DATE: Northern Yearly Meeting High School Fall Retreat will be October 11-13 at Twin Cities Meeting in St. Paul.
OTHER HAPPENINGS AMONG QUAKERS
“Q Basics,” a workshop on basic Quaker worship and faith, will be offered at Twin Cities Meeting (1725 Grand Ave, St. Paul) on Sat mornings, October 5, 19, 26, November 2. Concepts covered will include the Light within, higher Power, what happens in worship, when and how to speak, decision-making and clearness committees, personal leadings, and more. Interactive with presentations, short readings, and plenty of discussion, open to newcomers and those who want to deepen their Quaker practice. A commitment to all four meetings is encouraged, but it’s fine to come when you can. There is an unprogrammed global meeting for worship (GMFW) on Wednesdays at 1 pm (CT) via Zoom. This worship offers a remarkable worship opportunity, community, and varied theological perspectives with people from four countries and most regions of the U.S. participating and is an important outreach to isolated and mobility-limited Quakers. The Traveling Ministry Corps of Friends World Committee for Consultation is welcoming applications for a 2020 cohort of traveling ministers. Global Climate Strike, Twin Cities is Fri, Sept. 20th. Join young people, parents, workers, and all concerned citizens in a massive strike calling for attention to the climate crisis. Demonstrate at the State Capitol, 11:30-2. More at mnipl.org/event
MN Interfaith Power and Light and Honor the Earth invite you to a global climate action: Protecting our Sacred Waters – Gathering at the Headwaters, Sept 21-22 at Lake Itasca State Park. Gather prayerfully and in solidarity with our Anishinaabe and Dakota siblings in opposition to Line 3. Optional camping at Itasca State Park. Food provided, donations encouraged. – Walk for Planet Peace: Honoring Gandhi’s Vision, Sat, Sept 21st, gathering on the St. Paul Cathedral steps at 9:30 AM to walk to the State Capitol. Rev. James Lawson and Fr. John Dear, are among the speakers.
– Fellowship of Reconciliation’s Truth and Reparation Campaign launch, Hamilne U’s Anderson Center Sun, Sept 22, 2 PM
