~ Also on Sept 15: Religious Education (for youth) orientation for families at 12:15
~ Oct 6th during potluck: Further consideration of Sunday morning schedule change (Check out the flyer on the bulletin table which describes the contemplated schedule change in the coming year) Child care provided for families. Please come!

The Child Welfare Committee has revised the meeting’s child protection policy. It was sent out with the August monthly meeting draft minutes and via the Google group. There are a few paper copies available on the elevator table and it is posted on the website: minneapolisfriends.org/2019/08/21/child-welfare-policy-and-procedures-revision-draft/. Please review and give feedback / corrections to Rae Beth.

First day school (Sunday school) is gearing up! The year will be divided into quarters with different testimonies providing the focus of each quarter. There will be three classes: grades 1-5; middle school; and high school. Teachers, helpers, and special guests are sought! Have a personal Quaker story to share? A Quaker hero you’d like to talk about? Want to help nurture and develop deeper relationships with the Meeting’s youth? Let Julia know of your interest.

Our next opportunity for preparing and serving a meal through Loaves and Fishes is Sept 30th. Plan to attend!

Join an unprogrammed community worship on Fri, Sept 6, at noon, at the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building, 1 Federal Drive, St. Paul. Meet at the back entrance, accessible from the parking lot. The Federal Building houses the offices of ICE, Bloomington Immigration Court, and the Homeland Security offices. Bring a chair. Contact Debbie or Nettie for more details.

OTHER HAPPENINGS AMONG QUAKERS

There are two more days to be a lobbyist at the State Fair. The metro Friends Committee on National Legislation advocacy team encourages Friends who go to the State Fair to visit their federal Congressional representatives and senators there and let them know that you support repeal of the 2001 and 2002 Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMF) that provide the legal basis for US military combat operations around the world. The House of Representatives (but not the Senate) has passed repeals of both AUMFs as amendments to two “must pass” defense spending bills. The House and Senate now have to negotiate a bill that will pass both houses. Let your representatives and senators know that they should not support either bill unless it includes the AUMF repeals. More information and a handout to give to your congressperson is on the elevator table.

A memorial for Pat Van Cleve will be held Sat, Sept 7th, 2 PM at Twin Cities Meeting, 1725 Grand Ave, St. Paul. Light refreshments will be served afterwards.

Linden Hills Library: Let’s Talk About Race – Join the monthly discussion group on race in our society this Thurs, Sept 5, 6:30-8PM on the online Storymap, “Displaced, A history of race and place in Southwest Minneapolis” created by Mapping Prejudice. The group is volunteer-facilitated and focused on learning and growing.

Hear Alan Lessik, former MFM member, read from his book, The Troubleseeker, as well as from his novel-in-progress, The Kenzo Koan, this Thurs, Sept 5, 6-8 PM. Event sponsored by Metropolitan State University’s Alumni Association and Women’s and LGBTQ Center. Click here for more.

Mayim Rabim, the congregation that rents space here, is having an open session, Get to Know Mayim Rabim, next Sun, Sept 8th, at 3:30 PM. Join Rabbi Sharon Stiefel and other congregational leaders for refreshments and lively conversation, and to learn about Reconstructionist Judaism and the values and practices that make Mayim Rabim a unique, welcoming place.

Global Climate Strike, Twin Cities will be Sept. 20th. Join young people, parents, workers, and all concerned citizens in a massive strike calling for attention to the climate crisis: demonstrate at the MN State Capitol, 11:30-2. And at the Gichi-gami Gathering to Stop Line 3 on Sat, Sept 28th, in Duluth on the western-most tip of Gichi-gami, Lake Superior. Buses from the Twin Cities are being arranged. MN Interfaith Power and Light and Honor the Earth invite you to a global climate action: Protecting our Sacred Waters – Gathering at the Headwaters, Sept 21-22 at Lake Itasca State Park. Gather prayerfully and solidarity with our Anishinaabe and Dakota siblings in opposition to Line 3. Optional camping at Itasca State Park. Food will be provided, donations encouraged. Twin Cities NonViolent is hosting ten days of special events to foster peace and encourages participation in more than forty events from over twenty organizations across the Twin Cities, Sept 20-29, including:
– Walk for Planet Peace: Honoring Gandhi’s Vision on his 150th Birthday, Sat, Sept 21st, gathering on the St. Paul Cathedral steps at 9:30 AM to walk to the State Capitol.
– Fellowship of Reconciliation’s Truth and Reparation Campaign launch, Hamilne U’s Anderson Center Sun, Sept 22, 2 PM
– Preserving Human Rights for Immigrants and Asylum Seekers panel with representatives from Nonviolent Peaceforce and other organizations, Mon, Sept 23, 5 PM, Plymouth Congregational Church, 1900 Nicollet Ave, Mpls
