George Watson once stated that he read the last chapter of Testament of Devotion at least once a year. Come read that chapter together at the Watson reading group THIS Tues, Aug 20h, at 7 PM in the conference room. No need to read ahead. One-timers and regulars – everyone is welcome! We’ll also decide whether to read more of Testament or choose another title.
A new writing group has started and will next meet on Tues, Aug 27th (NOTE CORRECTED DATE) at the home of Jane – a relaxed but structured group with a focus on developing a spiritual practice through writing. Each month we’ll write and have the chance to share with each other. Everyone welcome. Contact Jane with questions or interest.
OTHER HAPPENINGS AMONG QUAKERS
From Friends Committee on National Legislation: Senators are home for the August recess and they need to hear from you. Take action to address the crisis of gun violence and other vital issues (immigration, climate, criminal justice, Native Americans) by visiting them this month. More at: fcnl.org/updates/august-recess-a-time-for-action-2214
Be a lobbyist at the State Fair. The metro-area Friends Committee on National Legislation advocacy team encourages Friends who go to the State Fair to visit their federal Congressional representatives and senators who will be campaigning there and let them know that you support repeal of the 2001 and 2002 Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMF) that provide the legal basis for US military combat operations around the world. The House of Representatives (but not the Senate) has passed repeals of both AUMFs as amendments to two “must pass” defense spending bills. The House and Senate now have to negotiate a bill that will pass both houses. Let your representatives and senators know that they should not support either bill unless it includes the AUMF repeals. Imagine if they go back to Washington having heard from hundreds of Friends about this issue! Look for more information and a handout on the bulletin table that you can give to the representative or senator.
