UPCOMING MEETING EVENTS

Next Sunday mid-morning program at 10:15: Is there a quotation that is meaningful to you? Song lyrics that resonate with your experience? A poem that speaks to your condition? Once again there will be an opportunity to share something important to you and to hear those things dear to others. Please come willing to share and willing to listen. Jeannette Raymond will facilitate this interactive session.

Nominating Committee is preparing nominations for committee membership and leadership roles. An updated list of committee descriptions is on the Meeting website under the “News and Business” section, then click “Committees”. Also available on the elevator table. Please let committee members (Ed, Mary, Annamary, Gayle, or Doug) know your gifts, knowledge, experience, and leadings as they pertain to Meeting work and ministry.

Loaves and Fishes: TOMORROW, Mon, Jan 30th is the next opportunity for MFM to help serve dinner to the people of the Phillips neighborhood at Holy Rosary Church, 2424 18th Av. S. Please help if you have a few hours between 1:30pm and 7pm that day. Volunteers sign up for shifts: chopping veggies or prepping dessert fruit 1:30‑4:30pm; serving food 4:45‑ 6:30pm; clean up 5:30‑7pm. Fresh fruit donations for dessert are needed, too. Sign up on the bulletin table.

OTHER HAPPENINGS AMONG QUAKERS

A Northern Yearly Meeting high school retreat is this coming weekend at Twin Cities Meeting; theme: Climate Change and Eco-Justice. Kindly Adult Presences are sought. The NYM high schoolers are an engaged, insightful, vibrant part of our area Quaker family!

A Young Adult Friends, (ages 18-35,) dinner and worship will be held on Thurs, Feb 23rd at 6:00 pm at Riise’s apartment in Falcon Heights. Call/text when you arrive to be let in. A 30 -minute unprogrammed worship will be followed by a vegan dinner at 6:30 pm. Ross Hennessy, Assistant Director of Quaker Voluntary Service (QVS), will be there, talking about ways area young adult Friends can get involved in the QVS house, opening in the Cities in the fall of 2018. Northern Yearly Meeting is in the middle of its nominating season. Friends are being sought for the Advancement and Outreach Committee (traveling to visit and worship with far-flung Meetings and worship groups); Ministry and Nurture Committee, (responsible for caring for worship and a welcoming, worshipful atmosphere at NYM gatherings); Communications Committee (responsible for newsletter oversight and inter-Meeting communication); and Finance Committee. White Privilege Conference will be held in Kansas City April 27-30. Once again, Friends General Conference (FGC) will offer deeply discounted group rates for interested Quakers to attend, and Friends in Kansas City will provide hosting. COMMUNITY EVENTS

Join the Anti-War Committee in sending a loud message of NO to President Trump and of solidarity with our immigrant sisters and brothers in response to a media report on Jan 25th that President Trump is circulating a draft executive order titled “Protecting the Nation from Terrorist Attacks by Foreign Nationals.” The draft order says that the U.S. will temporarily ban entries from Iraq, Iran, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen, and bars all refugees from coming to the US for several months. Capri Theater (2027 W Broadway, north Minneapolis) is showing is Spike Lee’s Malcolm X THIS Thurs, Feb 2nd, at 7 pm. Admissions is $5; discussion afterwards! Mayim Rabim invites Friends to hear Odeh Muhawesh, an Adjunct Professor of Theology at the U of St. Thomas, speaking on: What are the origins of extremism and radicalization in the world’s Islamic communities? on Sun, Feb. 12th, from 3:00-4:30 PM, here at the meetinghouse. Free.
