MEETING SCHEDULE AND PROGRAM

You are welcome at the potluck today at the rise of semi-programmed worship. Please come even if you did not bring a potluck item! Potlucks are rather do-it-yourself affairs. Look for ways to help the effort – help clear, wash and dry dishes, put away chairs and wash and store tables. Thank you Friends. Together we make the load light!

If you have had problems with the Meeting’s online directory or if you have questions about its capabilities, please speak to Pat or David today. They are meeting with a Lifetouch representative on Wed.

UPCOMING MEETING EVENTS

Next Sunday at 9:45 is monthly meeting for business. Of particular note on the agenda: Vision Statement priorities, modified and honed over the last several months (copies here at the meetinghouse, posted on the bulletin board, and on the website); Stewardship and Finance update about contributions.

Caring for Creation tip: Today’s vehicles are designed to warm up fast so avoid idling when you can. Idling is 0 miles per gallon! Cloth bag update: Leave an extra one or two sturdy cloth bags that you have at home in the basket on the elevator table. Need one or two? Take then! Consider taking an extra one when shopping to offer to another shopper who doesn’t have one!

Read and discuss Karen Armstrong’s, “12 Steps to a More Compassionate Life” at the George and Elizabeth Watson discussion group, Wed, Nov 19th at 7. All are welcome first-timers, one-timers, regulars, old-timers. No  prep needed.

Northern Yearly Meeting Interim Session, open to all, this Fri evening, Nov 6th and all day Sat, Nov 7th, at Madison Friends Meeting, WI. Take the opportunity to get to know people from NYM in a more intimate setting, hear preliminary reports, and enjoy good food and Quaker hospitality! Overnight accommodations available in area Quaker homes. Pat and Carolyn are going. Call or email the office if you are planning or are interested in attending.

Our next time preparing and serving with area Quakers at Loaves and Fishes is at the end of this month! Mon, Nov. 30 (5th Monday) at Holy Rosary Church. Prep starts at 2:00 pm; prep for the serving around 4:00; serving starts at 5:15; clean-up around 6:00, finishing by 7:00. A sign-up sheet with more info will be available soon.

Friends for a Non-Violent World Holiday Fair will be HERE Fri, Dec 4, 1-9 PM and Sat, Dec 5, 10 AM – 4 PM! Start working on or planning what you will donate, and save time in your calendar to come for holiday cheer and shopping!

Offering boxes are located on small tables near the meetingroom doors. Please give as you are able. If you would like to automate your financial contributions, please talk to Roland, clerk of Stewardship.

OTHER HAPPENINGS AMONG QUAKERS

Friends for a Nonviolent World will be holding a fundraiser for Syrian refugees here at the meetinghouse on Sat, Nov. 15, 6:30 PM. Speakers Congressman Keith Ellison and Dr. Aref Al Khali, a doctor with the Syrian American Medical Society who has done work with Syrian refugees. Silent Auction. Light refreshments. Save the date!

Nightingales will have their Fall gathering Nov 20-22 in East Troy Wisconsin (SW of Milwaukee). Newcomers and old-timers, young and old, anyone who likes to sing is welcome. Contact the office for more.

Conference on Earthkeeping for all faith communities at St Mark’s Episcopal Church, Mpls next weekend. Fri, Nov 6th, 7 PM “Merchants of Doubt” documentary showing; Sat, Nov 7th, 8:30 AM discussion, workshops, breakout sessions, (lunch, dinner, and snacks included) concluding with Dr. Benjamin Santer, world-famous climatologist, at 7:30 PM. Intergenerational Activism for Peace is this year’s MN Alliance of Peacemaker’s annual gathering Tues, Nov 10th 6:30-9 PM at Perpich Center for Arts Education, 6125 Olson Memorial Hwy, Golden Valley. Speakers: author, activist, storyteller and educator Rose McGee and youth peace essay contest winners. $5-15 suggested donation. See posted flyer for more.

CIA whistleblower, John Kiriakou, and psychologist Bradley Olson, will headline two upcoming events. “US Torture: Insider Perspectives on the Pursuit of Ethics and Justice” – a lunchtime convocation 11:30 AM-12:30 PM, Thurs, Nov 12th, at Hamline, Anderson Center, Rm 111, 774 Snelling Ave N, St Paul; “Torture: Back in the Spotlight and How to Keep It There” – 3:00-5:00 PM, also Nov 12th, in Willey Hall, U of MN, 225 – 19th Ave S, Mpls. Events sponsored by Tackling Torture At the Top, a committee of Women Against Military Madness, Wm Mitchell School of Law’s World Without Genocide and The Advocates for Human Rights. Both events are free and open to the public.

Middle East Peace Now presents Alison Weir discussing her new book, Against Our Better Judgment: The Hidden History of How the U.S. Was Used to Create Israel, which documents the history of the Israel lobby in the US. Weir will also discuss the root of current violence in Israel-Palestine, distorted media coverage of the region, and why American taxpayers continue to send Israel over $10 million per day. Q&A will follow. Sat, Nov 14th, 9:30 AM, Southdale Library, 7001 York Ave S, Mpls. Weir is executive director of If Americans Knew, a research and information-dissemination institute focused on Israel-Palestine. Weir first studied US-Israel relations after traveling to the Middle East as an independent journalist in 2001.

Mayim Rabim invites Friends to their Fall FUNdraiser: Cabaret and Silent Auction, Sat, Nov 14th from 6:30-9:00 PM, here at the meetinghouse. Come for an evening of singing, strumming, and hamming it up, silent auction, and light refreshments. Suggested donation $5 – more if you can / less if not.

Every Church a Peace Church potluck and meeting Mon, Nov 16th, 6:30 PM at St. Joan of Arc, 4537 Third Ave S, Mpls. The topic: War and the Environment – Why Environmentalists Must Oppose War with Prof Duane Cady. See flyer for more.

Refugees from warm climates do not own winter coats or accessories. Please help give a WARM welcome to new refugees by donating new or gently used warm coats, hats, mittens, and gloves. Especially needed are larger boys’ sizes and small-medium adult coats. Also needed, twin and queen bedding. Donations can be brought to the MN Council of Churches Church Center at 122 W Franklin Ave, Mpls. Questions? OFFICE HOURS
Pat Jones’ work week is Wed-Sun. She will be in the office Wed. from 2:00-5:00 and other times Wed, Thurs, and Sat.
Carolyn VandenDolder, the Administrative Assistant, will be in Wed. afternoon and Fri. morning.  Bulletin deadline, noon Thur. Bulletin items can be phoned in to the office, emailed or written and put in the bulletin file of the blue box.
